In 2010, Port Washington resident Monika Dorman brought together a group of rowers and community leaders to pursue her vision of a rowing club for the children of Port Washington. Monika had rowed the waters around the Port Washington peninsula for many years. She recruited Mitch Tamkin and Steve Panzik, both former high school, collegiate and US Junior Team rowers, and Bo Hansen, a former Danish National Lightweight rower. The rowers joined with Trish Quirk and several other community advocates to form Friends of Port Rowing. Together, the work began. A generous donor purchased seven used boats. In April, 2011, 94 novice rowers took to the water from the Village Club of Sands Point with Steve Panzik as head coach. We won five races at our first competition, the Big Duck Regatta. Our Boys Four won a gold medal at the Long Island Championships. Our Girls Four won a New York State Championship in Saratoga. That was just the beginning.
